Toxic chemicals in cosmetics

Baby wipes are considered a cosmetic product as they contain ingredients that are applied to the baby’s skin. It may surprise some readers to know that in the US and Australia, the cosmetics industry is largely unregulated. Both the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) in the USA and the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) in Australia have very limited powers of enforcement over cosmetic products. With the global cosmetics industry now worth over US$400 billion annually and the number of reported adverse reactions growing, calls for tighter regulation are growing. Consumers need to be able to trust the products are truly safe to use.

The EU is considered the leader in cosmetics regulation, having banned a long list of dangerous chemicals from cosmetics and forcing every new cosmetic product to go through a detailed and expensive registration process before being allowed to be sold in the European Union. Joonya is proud to say we have been through this process and are now registered in the EU and UK markets.

Some of you may be interested in a documentary we came across about chemicals in cosmetics, called ‘Pretty Toxic’. It has only recently been released on Vimeo and it may be released on other platforms at a later date. For now you need to rent it to view. Take a look at the trailer to see if it interests you first – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/prettytoxic/519740746?autoplay=1

Anyone who uses a lot of cosmetics (not just babies!) needs to be aware of the safety of any ingredients being applied to their skin, as a decent amount gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Baby skin in particular is very absorbent as it has not had time to build up enough layers to create a strong barrier. We believe in raising awareness of the importance of checking cosmetic ingredients, allowing customers to make informed decisions. The health of us and our babies is too important to ignore!
